The surge of Japanese-style tapas dens popping up around S.F. has finally given NorCal sushi savants a lively Izakaya sampling field. In the heart of Pacific Heights, Yoshi’s (415-655-5600) doubles as a world-class jazz club and sushi spot, while Sozai (415-681-7150), in Inner Sunset, is famous for its sake bar. The teams behind both locales came together in November to open Nombe in the Mission District. Don’t pass up Hotel Kabuki’s O Izakaya (415-614-5431) lounge in Japantown or Oyaji (415-379-3604) and Halu (415-221-9165) in Inner Richmond. Pass the edamame! KELSEY McKINNON
